Butterfly Bush
Zone 5 - 9
Tall, vase-shaped, upright shrub with variegated yellow and green leaves. In late summer it is adorned with long, upright panicles of fragrant, purple-red flowers. Very showy. Blooms late summer and early fall. Vanilla fragrance. In colder climates, acts like a sub-shrub -- its root systems overwinter but most of the upper bush does not. In early spring cut it back to 20-30 cm from the ground to encourage new growth. Can be very late to leaf out in the spring. Sometimes ours do not show any signs of life until June! Do not give up on the plant prematurely. Best in sun to part shade in moist, well-drained soil. HEIGHT: 150-200 SPREAD: 120-150
