An Asian shrub, Caryopteris provides some of the best late season blues. Caryopteris are bushy, plants covered with clusters of fragrant, spirea-like blooms from August until October. 'Dark Knight' is one of the loveliest varieties with silvery-grey foliage and deep blue flowers. Late season butterflies love this plant. Treat Caryopteris like a sub-shrub, cutting back the woody stalks early every spring to 30-35 cm from the ground. Best grown in a sunny situation with moist, fertile, well-drained soil.
