Iris ensatas perfer rich moist to wet soils in full sun or part shade. They are not tolerant of dry conditions, and best sited along wet pond edges or streams. During the growing season Iris ensata cultivars thrive with their roots submerged, but water must be removed during the winter months to avoid root rot. Easily create your own bog garden with a piece of rubber pond lining or for a bigger garden use an old wading pool sunk into the soil.
