Red Hot Poker, Torch Flower
Zone 6 - 9 (maybe hardier to Zone 5)
This smaller form of Red Hot Poker is perfect for smaller locations and containers. Produces dense, lemon-yellow flowerspikes from June to September. Blooms rise above clumps of narrow, leathery green foliage which has an upright, arching form. Prefers average to dry, well-drained, sandy soils in full sun. Protect from winter wet which can be deadly. Remove spent flower stalks to encourage repeat blooming. It is recommended to tie up the leaves of Kniphofia in winter to keep wet from settling in the crowns. Untie in the spring and remove any dead foliage.
