Mayapple
Zone 3 - 8
Looking for something exotic for your shady garden? This may be it. Mayapple is a native woodland plant. Each plant produces a large, umbrella-shaped leaf. Under the leaf a single white flower will bloom in the spring followed by a round fruit -- the 'may apple'. This plant spreads fairly rapidly via underground rhizomes soon forming a large, dense colony of 'umbrellas'. Best grown in part to full shade. Likes moisture in the spring but will tolerate drier conditions in the summer. This plant is a groundcover and it will overrun other clump-forming perennials so do plant it accordingly. Try it with something else spready like Ostrich Ferns. HEIGHT: 30-45 cm SPREAD: 40-50 cm
