American Elderberry

Large native shrub with multi-season interest. Produces masses of fragrant, white, flat-topped, flower clusters in mid-summer followed by purple-black berries in August and September which are attractive to birds. Compound pinnate green leaves turn bright yellow in the fall. This is a vigorous shrub best grown in sun to partial shade and tolerant of a variety of soil conidtions. Plant will become more drought tolerant as it ages. Prune hard in the early years to promote strong, bushy growth. Suckers freely and is excellent for naturalizing.
