Standing Ovation Little Blue Stem
Zone 3 - 9
Schizachyrium scoparium and its cultivars have been named the Perennial Plant of the Year 2022.
AKA Andropogon scoparius. This native, clumping grass is exceptionally drought tolerant. It has sturdy, upright, blue stems which are dark purple closer to the base. Leaves turn firey-red in the fall and remain showy thoughout the winter. Blades have an excellent thicker substance. Silvery seedheads appear in late summer and persist through fall.
Prefers average well-drained soil in full sun and can tolerate drought, once established. Thrives in summer heat and humidity. Plants should be cut back in the spring to make way for new growth. Too much moisture or too fertile a soil will cause flowers to fall over, creating a messy look. Spectacular when mass planted, undulating and moving in the breeze. HEIGHT: 90-120 cm SPREAD: 50-70 cm
