Stylophorum diphyllum

Stylophorum diphyllum

Yellow Wood Poppy, Flaming Poppy

Zone 4

This Ontario native is on the endangered list and is rarely offered. It is a low growing perennial with bluish-green, lobed foliage with silver undersides. Produces saucer-shaped, golden-yellow, poppy-like flowers in late spring to early summer. Best grown in full to partial shade, in moist to wet soil. Plants will go dormant in early summer if the soil drys out.

Yellow sap from the stems was used to make dyes. Do not confuse this plants with Chelidonium majus (Greater Celadine), a Eurasian, weedy invader which is widely distributed. It is much bigger and coarser.
