Japanese Wisteria
Zone 3
A superior form which is not always available. Flowering from June to September with fragrant lilac-blue flowers Requires sturdy support and plenty of space. Do not fertilize as this will reduce or prevent flowering. Best in full sun and average soil. Grafted stock which will flower much sooner than seed grown plants. HEIGHT: 8-10 m SPREAD: 4-5 m
Wisterias prefer average to moist, well-drained soil in full sun. Pruning should be done in early spring when flower buds are swollen. These should be left but the remaining branches can be trimmed to desired length. In the summer months, continual pruning of the new shoots should be done to maintain a tidy size. Wisterias need a very sturdy support structure to grow on because of its vigorous growth habit. NOTE: Bean-like seed pods produced in the fall are poisonous.
Grown in: 1 GALLON container
